CBS’ television coverage of the final day of the PGA Championship has been panned by viewers for showing ‘more commercials than golf’.

The second major of the year has been split by multiple networks in the US, with ESPN taking the morning and CBS picking up the afternoon action as the best players in the world battle it out for the $20.5 million prize pot.

But as viewers settled down for what is expected to be one of the best afternoons of golf in years, it was hard to ignore the sheer amount of commercials being pumped out by CBS in their first hours of coverage.

In fact, Sports Business Journal reporter Josh Carpenter revealed there had been ‘five minutes, 40 seconds of commercials in the first 17 minutes of the 2pm hour.’

Elsewhere, one viewer noted: ‘CBS coverage of the PGA CHAMPIONSHIP is horrible, no golf, just commentary and commercials.’

Another added: ‘@CBS Could we see more golf? This is unwatchable. We are seeing more commercials. I know y’all will show Rory walking to his ball more than you will show golf.’

The final day of the PGA Championship at Aronimink is shaping up to be an historic day of action, with 22 players within four shots of top spot as the leaders teed off for their final round.

Little-known American Alex Smalley was atop the tree after the third round, but the likes of Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm are lurking close behind ready for a huge final day of action in Pennsylvania.

McIlroy is looking to go back-to-back in the majors after winning the Masters at Augusta last month.

Smalley, meanwhile, has never won a tournament on the PGA Tour, let alone a major championship.

This year’s $20.5m prize pot is the largest in PGA Championship history, with the winner alone taking home $3.7m.
