Locals to decide name for Wylfa SMR project

Great British Energy – Nuclear (GBE-N) has today launched a naming competition for its flagship small modular reactors (SMR) at Wylfa on Anglesey in North Wales.

In November last year, it was announced that Wylfa had been selected as the location for the UK’s first SMRs, which was followed by GBE-N signing contracts with Rolls-Royce SMR to be the technology provider for the project.

GBE-N’s Chief Executive, Simon Roddy, said

“This is the start of a decades-long relationship with the people of Anglesey, so it’s only right that we ask them to help name the power station which will be a part of this community’s story for generations.

“Wylfa is a first‑of‑a‑kind project for the UK, with long‑term benefits both locally and nationally, and at GBE‑N we are serious about delivering it safely, responsibly and with the community at its heart.

“This is our moment to deliver on a nationally critical mission and we’re excited and committed to doing it together.”

Minister for Nuclear, Lord Vallance, said

“This is a historic moment for North Wales – the UK’s first small modular reactor project will create good jobs and opportunities for current and future generations – so we want the local community to help name it.

“We’re putting Anglesey at the heart of Britain’s new golden age of nuclear that will help to power the country with clean, homegrown energy that we control.”

Secretary of State for Wales, Jo Stevens, said

”The UK Government is delivering on its promise to bring new nuclear to Anglesey. This project, backed by a historic £2.6 billion from the UK Government, will support thousands of jobs on the island, boost economic growth, and help secure the UK’s energy independence.

“I’m excited about the role that the people of Anglesey will play in selecting a name for the site. Local people are central to this project and will be for generations to come.”

Anglesey residents have until 5pm on Monday 8th June to submit their suggestions, with the winning name being announced soon after.
