Jon Rahm has finally brought an end to his long-running fines saga with the DP World Tour by settling the seven-figure bill that had threatened to see him exiled from the Ryder Cup.

In a move that will draw a line under a two-year dispute, the LIV rebel has agreed to pay sanctions worth an estimated £2million as well as committing to five DP World Tour events across the remainder of this season.

The former world No 1 will continue to play on the LIV circuit alongside those sojourns, but by accepting this offer from the DP World Tour he has staved off the worrying prospect of losing his membership with the Wentworth-based circuit.

Rahm’s climbdown follows his surprising decision to reject similar terms less than three months ago, and insiders have pointed to the recent implosion of LIV as a probable factor in his dramatic change of heart.

While European captain Luke Donald will no doubt be thrilled to shed the uncertainty that had raged around Rahm’s participation in the 2027 Ryder Cup, it remains to be seen if this is the first step towards a broader re-immersion on the DP World Tour for the former world No 1.

Saudi Arabia’s announcement last week that they are withdrawing their LIV backing at the end of this season has left all of their leading lights in a volatile situation. Unless LIV secure alternative funding in the near future, the 2026 campaign could be their last, despite upbeat noises from the hierarchy of the breakaway tour.

Rahm’s position in that scenario was particularly intriguing. He signed for a reported fee of around £400m in late 2023, but his decision to retain his DP World Tour membership alongside his lucrative LIV deal meant he racked up fines each time he played a conflicting event.

For the better part of two years, he refused to stump up on a point of principle, despite being implored to end the row by the likes of Rory McIlroy.

That he has now done so will be seen as a necessary concession after LIV’s financial woes. A spokesperson for the DP World Tour said: ‘The DP World Tour and Jon Rahm have come to an agreement on conditional releases to play in conflicting tournaments on LIV Golf during the remainder of its 2026 season.

‘This involves payment of all outstanding fines accrued from 2024 to date, along with participation in agreed DP World Tour tournaments (outside the majors) in the remainder of the 2026 season.’

An earlier attempt by the DP World Tour to broker peace saw Rahm snub an offer to pay his fines and return for six events in 2026 as a means of keeping his membership accruing no further sanctions. Those terms were agreed by eight fellow LIV rebels, including Tyrrell Hatton, but Rahm held firm.

His decision to relent at this stage is perhaps unsurprising given the perilous state of his main employers on LIV.

It is understood that the PGA Tour could soon seek to tempt the likes of Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau back to their circuit by resurrecting the favourable deal accepted by Brooks Koepka earlier this year.
