Shropshire Council is delighted to announce the appointment of Tanya Miles as its new Chief Executive, subject to ratification by Full Council on 14 May 2026.

Tanya has served as the council’s Interim Chief Executive since September 2025.

Before taking on the interim role, Tanya carried out her statutory role as Director of Adult Social Services and Director of Children’s Services and she has had numerous roles in adults and children’s services since joining the council in 1999 as a social worker.

During her time as Interim Chief Executive, Tanya has worked with councillors, staff and partners to maintain momentum on key priorities and continue improvements in services for residents, communities and businesses – all while leading the council towards a financially stable future.

Councillor Heather Kidd, Leader of Shropshire Council, said:

“There was strong competition through a rigorous recruitment process, but Tanya stood out as the right person to lead Shropshire into its next chapter.

“She brings not only enormous professional experience, but a genuine love of this county and a lifetime of service to its people. Tanya has literally worked her way up from a front-line social worker, and that gives her a grounding and understanding of public service that is hard to replicate.

“She is tough but fair, ambitious for this organisation, and committed to making Shropshire Council a positive place to work where staff feel valued, challenged and supported to improve.

“Tanya has also always put our residents at the heart of the council’s role.

“We have moved from crisis management towards recovery and improvement. With our Improvement Plan and Medium Term Financial Plan in place and our draft Corporate Plan soon to be approved, we now need to keep delivering – and Tanya is the right person to help lead that effort.”

Tanya Miles said:

“It is a real privilege to be appointed as Chief Executive of Shropshire Council. Since September, I’ve seen first-hand the commitment of our staff and the strength of our partnerships across the county.

“My focus is on supporting our workforce, working closely with members, and delivering the plans we have in place to stabilise, improve and put the council on a sustainable footing for the future.”
