Tottenham cult hero Erik Lamela has given an update on his ‘new hip’ having been forced into retirement by the issue last year.

The Argentine dealt with pain for years and is optimistic his latest surgery will be the start of a new chapter free of discomfort.

He shared pictures from hospital, including a snap of the X-ray, also posting a short video post-operation.

The caption read: ‘A bit sore but with my new hip, here’s hoping this prosthesis is the start of a life without pain.

‘A greeting to everyone, thanks to those who always write!’

Last year, Lamela opened up about his hip problem in an interview with TyC Sports. He said: ‘I retired due to a physical issue that had been bothering me for a long time.

Un poco dolorido pero con mi nueva cadera , esperemos que esta prótesis sea el comienzo de una vida sin dolor. 🤞
Un saludo para todos, gracias a los que escriben siempre ! 🙏 pic.twitter.com/iPtcA57WKe

‘I wanted to finish my career in the best possible way, enjoying it as much as possible despite this problem, which was quite difficult.

‘This problem was even more serious because I had suffered from cartilage wear and advanced osteoarthritis.

‘These last few years were much more serious in the sense that my hip was increasingly affected and I could no longer train like before.

‘That’s why I had to modify the way I trained because if I trained during the week, I wouldn’t play the game, because my hip couldn’t maintain certain performance levels during the week.’

Lamela was identified as a star of the future at River Plate at the start of his career and moved to Roma before signing for Tottenham in a £29million deal.

He became a fan favourite over eight seasons, known for his flamboyant style and scoring occasionally outrageous goals, including rabonas.

After eight seasons with Spurs, he joined Sevilla before ending his career with AEK Athens, where he retired last year.

He’s since gone back to Sevilla as part of their coaching staff.
