Sir Keir Starmer will on Tuesday face a Commons vote on whether he should face an inquiry into claims he misled parliament over the Peter Mandelson vetting saga.

Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle confirmed on Monday that MPs will debate whether or not the prime minister should be referred to the powerful Commons Privileges Committee for a probe over the peer’s appointment.

It comes after the prime minister has been accused of misleading MPs by saying that “full due process” was followed in appointing Lord Mandelson, who was given developed vetting status despite failing security checks.

Additionally, Sir Keir’s former chief of staff will today face questioning from MPs over the appointment.

Morgan McSweeney resigned from the role in February after taking “full responsibility” for advising the prime minister to make the appointment of the former Labour minister as ambassador to Washington.

His appearance at the Foreign Affairs Committee follows that of former Foreign Office chief Sir Olly Robbins and Cat Little, the Cabinet Office permanent secretary.
