The Independent’s White House correspondent captured the moment panic gripped the ballroom at the Washington Hilton as Secret Service agents tackled a gunman outside.

Andrew Feinberg was in attendance at the correspondents’ dinner on Saturday night (25 April) when shots rang out from the door behind the table where he and his colleagues were seated.

As security personnel swarmed the ballroom, demanding guests take cover, Feinberg caught the chaos on camera. Plates and glasses can be heard smashing to the floor as Secret Service agents race through the crowd.

“I don’t know why I recognized the sound as gunshots, but I did,” wrote Feinberg. “As people began screaming and pulling at each other’s clothes while urging them to “GET DOWN, GET DOWN!” under the table, security personnel began slamming the doors [shut].”
