Spain has dismissed reports suggesting the Pentagon is considering punitive measures against the country for its reluctance to support US operations in the Iran war.

Spain has refused to grant US forces access to its military bases or airspace, saying that US-Israel actions in the Iran war contravene international law.

That has infuriated President Donald Trump and an internal Pentagon email outlined options for the United States to punish NATO allies it believes failed to support U.S. operations in the war with Iran, including suspending Spain from the alliance.

“Well, we do not work with emails,” Sánchez told reporters Friday in response to the report. “We work with official documents and positions taken, in this case, by the government of the United States.”

He doubled down on the country’s stance, stating, “The position of the government of Spain is clear: absolute collaboration with the allies, but always within the framework of international legality.”
