George RR Martin’s Elden Ring is the latest video game to be adapted for the big screen – with Heartstopper star Kit Connor leading the impressive cast.
The fantasy role-playing game, which was co-written by the Game of Thrones author, came out in 2022 to universal acclaim, picking up multiple Bafta Game Awards and selling over 30 million copies worldwide.
It follows one of the Tarnished – an exiled member of fictional setting the Lands Between – as they attempt to repair the Elden Ring after it was shattered by ruler Queen Marika.
The game is set to become a live-action film, written and directed by Ex_Machina and Civil War’s Alex Garland.
Set for release in March 2028, production company A24 has now revealed its star-studded cast, with Connor being joined by Paddington’s Ben Whishaw, Beef star Cailee Spaeny, Strike’s Tom Burke and Bottoms actor Havana Rose Liu.
Others in the cast include Oscar-nominated actor Jonathan Pryce, Sonoya Mizuno, who starred in Ex_Machina, Margo’s Got Money Troubles’ Nick Offerman, Dear England’s John Hodgkinson, House of the Dragon’s Jefferson Hall, A Haunting in Venice’s Emma Laird and comedian Peter Serafinowicz.
The plot behind the film and the cast’s characters are yet to be revealed.
Sharing the news on Instagram, Connor – who previously worked with Garland on Modern Warfare – said that he is “ridiculously proud to be a part of this team”.
While Laird, who currently stars in BBC One crime drama, added: “So excited about this one!! Shoutout to all my gamer friends and my brother for the Elden Ring education.”
The news received a warm reception from fans, with one writing on X: “That cast feels less like blockbuster cosplay and more like they actually want the world to feel eerie and ruined. The real test is still whether they keep the mystery intact.”

Another said: “The live-action ELDEN RING cast is STACKED. Alex Garland directing?? yeah this might actually be insane.”
It’s been a successful few years for video game adaptations, with the Super Mario Bros Movie smashing box office records in 2023 despite poor reviews from critics.
Despite The Independent’s Clarisse Loughrey calling it an adventure in “comfortable mediocrity” at the time, it took home over $1.360bn (£1.006bn) around the world after opening in April that year.
Last year, A Minecraft Movie achieved a similar feat, becoming the highest-grossing video game adaptation in its opening weekend. It ultimately took home $967m (£716m) at the box office.
