Wolves have officially been relegated from the Premier League after eight years following West Ham’s draw with Crystal Palace.

Rob Edwards’ side have been rock bottom of the league for almost all of the season and their fate has finally been confirmed.

After 33 games the club have 17 points. They are 16 adrift of the Hammers, with only 15 left to play for.

They will now return to the Championship, which they won in 2018 under Nuno Espirito Santo, with the hope of an immediate return. It is a fall from the team that played in the Europa League in 2020, when they reached the quarter-finals.

But it’s been a disaster of a campaign for the club. They have won just three matches all season, scoring a league-low 24 goals.

They went into the season under the stewardship of Vitor Pereira, who was appointed last season and managed to keep them in the league.

What was a positive relationship with fans soon went south, however, and he was sacked in November when they had just two points to their name.

Rob Edwards was appointed, arguably with a view to next season, with relegation already expected. Edwards signed a three-and-a-half-year contract, so he will likely lead their response in the second tier next season.

Since he joined the club, Wolves have accumulated 15 more points, and were in decent form before the international break, beating Aston Villa and Liverpool and drawing against Arsenal.

But since the break, they have lost 4-0 against West Ham and 3-0 against Leeds and their relegation is now official.

They are three points off Burnley in the table, who could be relegated at the weekend too if results do not go their way.

In a statement, chairman Nathan Shi said: ‘Confirmation of our relegation is a difficult moment for everyone connected to Wolves. While this is a deeply disappointing outcome, work has been underway since my arrival in December to ensure we are ready to respond with clarity and conviction.

‘We are clear on what needs to improve, and our focus is now on strengthening the club, building momentum and creating a team our supporters can believe in. We know what is required and will approach the months ahead with purpose.

‘We know this season has tested your loyalty and patience. Your backing, home and away, has not been taken for granted. You deserve better and giving you a club you can genuinely be proud of is what drives everything we do from this point forward.’
