An estimated half a million people participated in a large anti-far-right demonstration in London, described by organisers as the biggest of its kind.

Protesters marched through the capital to Whitehall, carrying placards against racism and in support of refugees, under a heavy police presence.

Organisers stated the turnout successfully outnumbered a previous Tommy Robinson-led rally in September, which had between 110,000 and 150,000 attendees. Speakers at the rally included former Labour MP Diane Abbott and singer Billy Bragg, who performed protest songs and criticised the politics of division.

The demonstration, co-organised by groups like the Together Alliance and Stand Up To Racism, aimed to counter the “unprecedented growth” of far-right support in the UK.

The Metropolitan Police arrested 18 people for supporting Palestine Action, two for climbing up the National Gallery columns, and five others.
