California Governor Gavin Newsom has revealed that his kids don’t want him to run for president in 2028, at least for now.

Newsom is widely considered to be a potential Democratic candidate for the next presidential election, but has said publicly he’s yet to make up his mind about running.

Sitting down with Politico’s Jonathan Martin for an interview in San Francisco released Tuesday, Newsom said he will make his decision based on what’s best for his family.

Newsom spoke highly of his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, and their four children, whom he called his “works of art.”

When Martin asked how his family would vote on whether or not he should run for president, Newsom said, “It depends on the day of the week.”

He then told a story of his 14-year-old asking him a few months ago about running in 2028.

When Newsom denied that he had decided on a presidential bid, his son said, “Good.” The California governor then asked him what he meant by that, and his son replied, “We’re too young and you need to spend more time with us.”

Newsom led other prominent Democrats in a poll last month when asked who Americans would like to see as the party’s nominee in the 2028 presidential election.

According to the Yahoo/YouGov survey, 19 percent of Americans said they’d rather see Newsom as the Democratic nominee in 2028, 18 percent said former Vice President Kamala Harris, 13 percent said former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and 12 percent said Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

When asked who they would vote for in a race between the California governor and Vice President JD Vance, 49 percent said Newsom and 43 percent said Vance.

Newsom has gained popularity by trolling President Donald Trump as a way to fight against the Trump administration’s agenda.

The California governor told late-night host Stephen Colbert last September that he was putting “a mirror up to Trump and the absurdity of what’s going on in this country.”

Earlier this month, Newsom and Trump got into a spat over each other’s cognitive ability.

Trump said of the California governor’s struggle with the learning disability dyslexia, “I don’t want the president of the United States to have a cognitive deficiency.”

Newsom hit back, saying, “Too late,” implying Trump is the one facing cognitive decline.
