Plans have been revealed for a 70-storey skyscraper in Liverpool containing a luxury hotel and apartments.

The new tower, which would be the tallest building in the city, will house a five-star, 212-room hotel alongside 563 luxury apartments.

Guests and residents will have access to amenities including bars, restaurants, gyms and banquet halls, as well as a rooftop terrace.

The new building will be taller than the 140-metre West Tower, standing at 221.5m (727 feet).

Hugh Frost, chairman of developer Beetham Davos, said the project “will be the scheme’s signature building and is the ultimate expression of our confidence in Liverpool and the council’s backing for our ambition.”

Mr Frost added that talks are “well underway” with a global hotel brand operate out of the building.

The design of the tower draws on the naval engineering and industrial motifs as an ode to Liverpool’s maritime history.

The facade of the skyscraper will also reference another historic building in Liverpool, Oriel Chambers, which had the world’s first metal-framed glass curtain wall constructed in 1864.

Ian Simpson of SimpsonHaugh, which designed the building, said: “This is a landmark intervention for Britain’s most dramatic waterfront skyline. It is rooted in the city’s architectural vernacular and its maritime history but offers a very contemporary expression of both.”

It is thought that the new hotel will be frequently used by cruise ship passengers visiting Liverpool.

Some 135 cruise ships are scheduled to visit the city in 2026, equating to around 350,000 passengers, which the developers say will create a surge in demand for hotel spaces over the summer season.

The construction is part of the wider £1bn Kings development project, spanning eight acres across Liverpool’s waterfront.

Alongside the 70-storey tower, 10 other projects are being constructed, which will hold another hotel, an arts venue, offices, cafes, bars, restaurants and co-working spaces.
