College basketball star Aden Holloway insisted he ‘only smokes’ after police allegedly found more than 2lbs of marijuana in his apartment.

Holloway, a star guard for the Alabama Crimson Tide, was ‘removed from campus’ after he was arrested on Monday morning, the university announced.

As reported by AL.com, police claim to have discovered 964g of weed in his apartment on the eve of March Madness.

Holloway was arrested on a charge of first-degree possession of marijuana – a felony in Alabama. He was also hit with another felony charge of failing to affix a tax stamp.

The deposition and charging sheet alleges, according to AL.com, that as well as the marijuana, officers found a rolling tray and packaging material.

But a narcotics agent reportedly wrote in court documents: ‘Holloway stated that he wanted to remain silent, but then stated that he only smokes.’

Holloway’s agent, meanwhile, told AL.com: ‘What we’ve learned so far, even though it was a large quantity of marijuana, it’s personal use on his part… sounds like there’s no evidence of drug distribution or sales.’

Holloway was booked into Tuscaloosa County jail at 9:48am on Monday before being released around an hour later on $5,000 bond.

He is also facing a university investigation and has been suspended by the Crimson Tide – just days before Alabama kicks off its March Madness campaign. Coach Nate Oats said the team is ‘preparing to play without him this weekend.’

‘We’re disappointed in his behavior,’ Oats said on his radio show. ‘With that said, we still love him. He’s still our guy. We’re going to get him the help that he needs, and we’re going to continue to help him whatever way we can.’

Holloway has been one of the standout players for the Crimson Tide this season. The No 4 seed is slated to face Hofstra in the first round of March Madness on Friday.

The 21-year-old finished the regular season 14th in the SEC in scoring and was recently honored as a member of the All-SEC Third Team. Holloway and teammate Labaron Philon have been considered one of the best backcourt duos in the country this season.
