  • Second time South Sydney star has been in Wiggles video

Alex Johnston has received a tribute from an unexpected source after breaking the all-time first-grade rugby league try-scoring record – Australia’s most famous children’s entertainers.

The milestone came during South Sydney’s clash with the Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium, when Johnston scored early in the second half to surpass Ken Irvine’s long-standing record.

The achievement sparked emotional scenes inside the ground as thousands of fans ran onto the field to celebrate the historic try.

Now Johnston’s incredible feat has been immortalised in song by The Wiggles.

The group released a celebratory track titled AJ: The Greatest Try Scorer in Rugby League, marking the moment Johnston became the leading try-scorer in the history of first-grade rugby league in Australia.

‘The Wiggles …‬ perform a song to celebrate the historic achievement of ‪[South Sydney]‬ legend Alex Johnston breaking Ken Irvine’s record for most tries scored in first grade Rugby League in Australia,’ the group wrote on YouTube.

‘Congratulations AJ!!’

The tribute followed a message posted by the entertainers shortly after Johnston crossed for the record-breaking try.

‘A huge congratulations to our friend Alex Johnston, who tonight made history, becoming the all-time leading try scorer in first grade rugby league in Australia!’ they wrote.

‘What an incredible achievement – Go AJ!’

The honour highlights Johnston’s long-standing connection with the entertainers, who have previously collaborated with Rabbitohs players in past projects.

In 2023, Johnston appeared alongside teammates Thomas Burgess and Damien Cook in a Christmas video produced by The Wiggles.

The clip featured the trio playing Santa’s helpers in a festive song titled We Three Elves, with the players singing: ‘We three elves, get the toys up upon the shelves.’

Johnston was also presented with the match ball and a new jersey with a gold No.2 on the back for his incredible achievement that might never be surpassed.

‘I don’t know what to say, I’ll keep it short and sweet,’ Johnston said.

‘First and foremost to the fans, I just saw the footage of everyone running onto the field. Pretty special to be apart of that so thank you for making it a special evening.

‘I can’t thank my kids, partner and teammates enough. I couldn’t have done it without you all.’
