Adrian Grenier has addressed why he thinks he was left out of the upcoming sequel to the 2006 movie The Devil Wears Prada.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 — which comes out in theaters on May 1 — will follow Anne Hathaway’s fashion journalist Andy Sachs crossing paths once again with Meryl Streep’s formidable fashion editor Miranda Priestly as the pair appear set for a renewed clash inside the fashion world.

In the original movie, Grenier played Andy’s long-term boyfriend, Nate. However, speaking to Page Six in a recent interview, he revealed that while he “didn’t get the call” to be in the sequel, he does have a theory as to why.

“We’re all fans of the movie, whether or not we’re in it. Obviously, it was a disappointment that I didn’t get the call to be in the sequel, but I also understand there’s some backlash with Nate, the character, so that might have something to do with it,” he told the publication. “But I think that just leaves room for a spinoff.”

The fan’s dislike for Grenier’s character came from a lack of support for the demands of Hathaway’s character’s new job at the fictional Runway magazine, as he criticized her for a “change” in her personality and caring more about the job than she originally did.

Although the two characters are broken up by the end of the movie, Nate does return to tell Andy that he will be moving from New York to Chicago.

Grenier has previously spoken about the general dislike for his character in the film, telling Entertainment Weekly in 2021 that he never picked up on Nate’s qualities until after The Devil Wears Prada was released.

“I didn’t see some of the subtleties and the nuance of this character and what it represented in the film until the wisdom of the masses came online and started to push against the character and throw him under the bus, and I got flak,” he said at the time.

“All those memes that came out were shocking to me. It hadn’t occurred to me until I started to really think about it, and perhaps it was because I was as immature as Nate was at the time.

“And in many ways, he’s very selfish and self-involved; it was all about him. He wasn’t extending himself to support Andy in her career.”

Hathaway, Streep, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci will all return forThe Devil Wears Prada 2.

The original comedy-drama, an adaptation of Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel of the same name, followed Hathaway’s Andy as an aspiring journalist hired as co-assistant at a major New York fashion magazine, only to be mistreated by her demanding editor.

The movie made over $326m at the international box office and Streep was nominated for best actress by the Screen Actors Guild.
