The New York Jets are placing their franchise tag on Breece Hall, according to reports.

Hall, who will enter his fifth season with the team in 2026, completed his $9million rookie contract in New York last season, four years after being selected with the 36th pick in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Multiple sources revealed on Tuesday that the Jets have placed the franchise tag on their star running back for $14.29m, a move which takes him off the free agent market ahead of the 4pm deadline.

It also allows the two parties to negotiate a long-term deal this offseason, with Hall said to be keen on signing.

ESPN claims his tag is the non-exclusive version, meaning he can still negotiate with other teams and sign an offer sheet. The Jets would have first refusal and receive two first-round draft picks as compensation if they decline to match.

However, the 24-year-old will therefore only be leaving New York if he is traded or the tag is rescinded.

The Jets were forced to use the franchise tag after failing to reach an agreement over a long-term contract before Tuesday’s deadline. They have until July 15 to do so.

Failing that, the $14.29m for Hall to play the 2026 season will immediately count on their salary cap.

It is the first time the Jets have used their tag since doing so on Marcus Maye back in 2021. The safety never signed a long-term deal and left as a free agent a year later.

General manager Darren Mougey said last week that Hall ‘is a good player and we want to find a way to keep him around.’

The former Iowa State star rushed for a career-high 1,065 yards in 2025, despite Aaron Glenn’s Jets going 3-14 and missing out on the playoffs.

Nevertheless, he also finished with a mere 36 receptions – the second-lowest total of his four seasons at MetLife Stadium.

Hall spoke of his disappointment about not being traded at the midseason deadline after generating huge interest, having expressed frustration with the team’s shortcomings. His record with the Jets is 22-46.
