  • Collingwood have been ripped to shreds online

Collingwood have been slammed by footy fans after a scarcely believable ‘money grab’ image involving a will and testament was posted on social media.

Shared by an X user, the photo is captioned: ‘Um. My mum got this today. Are they serious? How much money do they need?’.

Fans on social media have called out the Magpies for the insensitive correspondence.

‘Any opportunity for a money grab. It’s gross,’ one wrote on X.

‘Well done Collingwood. Way to alienate your elderly supporters. This is such a bad look for the club,’ another added.

‘This is the most embarrassing thing I’ve ever seen a football club do, and I go for North Melbourne,’ bluntly said a third.

The letter contains details of the club’s ‘bequests’ process, where supporters are encouraged to leave a gift before they die.

‘By joining side by side forever with a gift in your will, you can leave a lasting mark on the club you love,’ the note reads.

‘Your support helps ensure every Magpie — past, present and future — stands together in strength, spirit and unity’.

Collingwood isn’t the only AFL club sending grim letters to fans.

The Sydney Swans, Essendon Bombers and GWS Giants all encourage fans to donate money from their wills to clubs.

NRL clubs have also started bequest systems.

The Brisbane Broncos were the first club to do so in 2020.

Other teams have since followed suit, with the Manly Sea Eagles and North Queensland Cowboys both offering an opportunity to ‘leave a legacy’.

‘Your bequest supports the Sea Eagles Foundation, helping to fund our Junior Development Pathways teams,’ information on the Sea Eagles’ website reads.

Collingwood are yet to respond to the recent backlash.
