The San Francisco 49ers announced on Friday that legendary quarterback John Brodie has died at the age of 90.

San Francisco co-chairman Dr. John York hailed Brodie as ‘one of the franchise’s all-time great players.’

In a statement, York said: ‘He will always be remembered as an important part of 49ers history. We express our deepest condolences to his wife, Sue, and the entire Brodie family.’

The quarterback was inducted into the 49ers Hall of Fame in the inaugural class of 2009, having spent his entire 17-season career with San Francisco.

Brodie was drafted third overall in 1957 and went on to throw for 31,548 yards and 214 touchdowns across 201 games.

He remains the longest-serving 49ers player in history, having hung up his cleats in 1973 before embarking on new careers in golf and broadcasting.

Brodie played in 230 events on the PGA Tour Champions, winning the 1991 Security Pacific Senior Classic and missing the cut just three times.
