Armed forces personnel will benefit from state-of-the-art technical training facilities and new accommodation blocks at MOD Lyneham.

The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) has handed over the new facilities, which were delivered by main contractor Kier Construction Western & Wales, with Mott MacDonald joining as the Technical Service Provider. The new facilities include three Single Living Accommodation blocks, providing 96 bedspaces for trainees and a further 72 beds for permanent staff and RAF personnel from other units completing specialist training. Meanwhile, the technical building includes classrooms, labs, workshops and office spaces.

The £82 million project has been completed to facilitate the relocation of RAF No 4 School of Technical Training (4SoTT) to Lyneham from MOD St Athan in South Wales under Project CUBIT.

Alongside the new facilities, the project will also see the creation of a 2.5MVA solar farm and battery storage system to power the new buildings, providing energy resilience and self-sufficiency for the new facilities.

The equivalent of 19 new jobs have been created as part of the construction work, alongside a supporting project at the MOD Lyneham Community Centre to create a more accessible, welcoming space for military families and the wider community.

Cibin Elias, DIO Project Manager said

We are delighted to have successfully delivered these world-class training facilities at MOD Lyneham. This project not only provides our armed forces personnel with exceptional places to learn and train but also provides new, high-quality accommodation.

These buildings will support the vital work of training our armed forces personnel for decades to come.

Wing Commander Chris Long, CUBIT Project Manager, said

The new facilities at MOD Lyneham represent a significant milestone for the future of RAF Ground Engineer training. Work is now underway to fit out the training facility, which will open in 2026 and provide 4SofTT with modern, purpose-built infrastructure to deliver the full spectrum of Ground Engineering Phase 2 and Phase 3 training.

Jason Taylor, Regional Director for Kier Construction Western & Wales, said

We have worked on-site at MOD Lyneham since 2015, showcasing our extensive experience in the defence sector and delivering assets that help train and support our Armed Forces.

We are proud to continue our strong relationship with the DIO on this project, one that reflects our commitment to creating high-quality environments that meet the needs of trainees and permanent employees.
