  • Rising footy star Emily French died suddenly

A teenager who represented Tasmania at national level in Aussie Rules has been remembered as a ‘lovely girl who was always smiling’ following her sudden death.

Wynyard Football Club shared the tragic news on their Facebook page on Tuesday, with Emily French’s passing rocking many of her teammates.

The youngster was described as someone who had ‘infectious brightness and a loving personality.’

In a statement, AFL Tasmania said they were ‘deeply saddened’ by the tragedy.

‘Emily was a beloved member of the Wynyard Cats and the Tasmania Devils Talent Pathways program, as well as the National Multicultural Academy,’ a spokesperson told The Mercury.

‘AFL Tasmania extends its deepest sympathies to Emily’s family and friends and members of the Tasmania Devils, Wynyard Football Club and North West Football League communities at this time.’

In a statement, the Wynyard Football Club confirmed Emily began in their under-14s girls team, before making her senior debut at just 16.

Labelled a ‘standout’ on the field, Emily later represented her state at the under-16 National Championships and was also a member of the Tasmania Devils’ representative program.

The youngster didn’t just excel with a Sherrin.

Wynyard Basketball Association also shared a number of photos from Emily’s days on court in their own tribute.

‘She was a very talented player, wonderful teammate and loving friend,’ the club posted on social media.

‘Emily was often at the stadium supporting her friends. A lovely girl who was always smiling.

‘Our very heartfelt thoughts are with her family and friends at this very sad time.’
