Scott McTominay’s transformation from Manchester United utility man to slick-backed, trophy-winning, bicycle-kick-scoring Napoli maverick swaggered on tonight.

And this time, he’s celebrating by lighting up a cigar.

Napoli, affectionately known as Gli Azzurri in the city where they are worshipped like gods, clinched yet another trophy as they triumphed 2-0 over Bologna in the Supercoppa Italiana final on Monday evening.

David Neres’ two goals were enough for Antonio Conte’s side on the night, but contributions from McTominay, as well as United loanee Rasmus Hojlund helped them roar through the showpiece.

It is Napoli’s second piece of silverware since McTominay arrived, and will ensure that the murals of the Scotsman – which can be found in every cobbled corner of the rough-and-ready port city – are going nowhere, any time soon.

Their golden boy will undoubtedly have a big night in store, and he has begun it by firing up a cigar in the changing room alongside team-mates Luca Marianucci and Antonio Vergara.

McTominay’s previous title win came in the form of Napoli’s famous 2024-25 campaign, where they finished just one point ahead of Inter Milan to clinch a famous Scudetto victory.

Their Supercoppa victory this evening – which is their first since the 2014-15 campaign and their second after winning it in 1990-91 – marks the first time Napoli have one two trophies in a calendar year since Diego Maradona graced the shirt.

‘We had fun tonight,’ the club’s president Aurelio De Laurentiis said.

‘It is not since the Maradona era that we won two trophies in a single calendar year, so that is already important.

‘I tell the fans dream away… always dream.’

Previously reserved for the Serie A and Coppa Italia champions, the Supercoppa was expanded in 2023 to add the league and cup runners-up, which this year were Inter and AC, who Napoli defeated in the semi-final.

The four-team format is contracted to be held in Saudi Arabia until 2029, with Monday’s final played out in the capital of Riyadh.
