Revealed: The frosty 11-word comment Ben Stokes said to Jofra Archer as tempers flared between England team-mates during third Ashes Test

Tempers flared between England skipper Ben Stokes and his star bowler Jofra Archer on Thursday morning, as England’s hopes of reclaiming the Ashes were left dangling by a very thin and fraying thread.

Archer had bowled beautifully during Australia’s first innings, and on day two, he dismissed both Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon to send England in to bat and chase down Australia’s total of 371.

While England had hoped to take two quick wickets, they struggled to get the two tail-enders out, with Starc again showing why he should now be dubbed an all-rounder, amassing his second half-century of the series.

With the ball in hand, England’s bowlers fell guilty to the same mistake they had made at The Gabba, with Archer and Brydon Carse throwing down too short and to the off-stump.

Starc revelled, swiping Archer away for three fours and Carse away for another two at the start of the day.

But Archer would ultimately snare the New South Wales pace bowler.

After a brief conversation with his captain, the Sussex pace bowler produced a fuller delivery that swung into Starc, who timed a forward drive poorly.

The ball careered into the top of the Australians’ stumps with Stokes, standing behind Archer, holding his hands up and shrugging.

Things then appeared to get frosty between Stokes and Archer as the latter celebrated the wicket with his team-mates.

Speaking on Fox Cricket, Mark Waugh believed there was a mix-up in communication between the pair. He believed England should have deployed a third man earlier in the morning and added that Archer was, perhaps not, bowling to his plans.

‘That was a breakdown in communication,’ Waugh said.

‘Whether they got plans and haven’t executed the plans, or Jofra’s saying: “I need a third man.”

‘Stokes has said: “Nah. That is where I wanted you to bowl”.’

Now, it appears a lip-reader has dissected the chat between Stokes and Archer and believes Waugh was partly right.

Fox Cricket reports that Stokes was, according to their lip-reader, seen telling appearing to Archer: ‘Mate, don’t complain about the field placings when you bowl s***.’

Stokes had also appeared to say: ‘bowl on the stumps and look what happens’.

Archer appeared to remonstrate with Stokes, but the lip-readers believe they saw the England captain telling the bowler to ‘shut the f*** up’.

It would take the hosts another six overs to find their next wicket, with Archer sending Nathan Lyon for lbw.

While the heated exchange was one of many big flashpoints on day two of the third Test, Archer and Stokes appeared to put it behind them.

The pair found themselves back in the thick of the action later in the day, as they attempted to save England’s innings.

They batted brilliantly together, making a partnership of 45 runs off 84 deliveries, before they were seen walking off sharing a fist bump.

Stokes, who gallantly spent over four hours at the crease today in the searing Adelaide heat, wrapped up the day just five runs short of his half-century, having faced 151 deliveries.

Despite the heated moment, the pair seemed to put the issue behind them. Stokes and Archer (L-R) were seen fist bumping each other as they walked from the field having amassed a partnership of 45

Archer would head into the sheds having amassed 30 runs, just eight shy of his Test record, which he achieved in Brisbane.

However, their spat earlier in the morning was not a good look for the tourists with former Australia batter Adam Gilchrist explaining to Fox that he felt their disagreement showed just how much stress the England skipper is under.

‘That strong discussion between Archer and Stokes, that’s intriguing,’ Gilchrist explained.

‘You just feel like Ben Stokes is teetering right on the edge. (He) spoke about his trust and faith with the players, his belief and trying to instil that and drag them with him. But it just feels like he is right on the edge.’
