Videos of reckless driving captured by the public have led to thousands of drivers being caught across West Yorkshire.

A van carrying a precarious and “extremely unsafe load” as well as the dangerous overtaking of a cyclist and horse riders were among those sent in via an online forum, West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) said.

It said 11,096 recordings had been received over the last year, with action taken against drivers in 65% of the cases – the equivalent of about 7,300 drivers.

Each submission is reviewed by officers to determine whether an offence has been committed and if action can be taken.

West Yorkshire Police said “Operation Snap” allowed members of the public to take action and help prevent collisions and road deaths.

WYCA said the number of submitted recordings continued to rise, with a 12.3% increase in 2025 when compared to the previous year.

Alison Lowe, West Yorkshire Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, said: “We are extremely grateful for the public support – you are making a real difference.

“We want to ensure that there is no place to hide for dangerous drivers and every dashcam brings that closer.”
