Guglielmo Vicario sounded a rallying call after his heroics helped Tottenham escape Monaco with a goalless draw.

Spurs were second best by a distance at the Stade Louis-II on Tuesday, with the home side peppering Vicario’s goal with 23 shots.

The Londoners resisted and added another point to their Champions League tally. They are unbeaten in the competition although rank as the lowest of the six English teams with five points from three games.

‘It depends always how you see things, but I don’t see it this way,’ said Vicario when asked if Spurs were struggling to make the step back up into Europe’s elite having won the Europa League but trailed in 17th in the Premier League last season.

‘In the Champions League we have played two away games where it is always tough to get points, and we managed to get two. So, seeing it from this perspective, it is a good amount of points.

‘Of course, we managed to win against Villarreal, we played a good game and won 1-0 so it was enough. Now we have five more to play and we will try our best to get the maximum points.’

Spurs, after two years of being criticised for being too open under Ange Postecoglou, have become resilient and harder to beat under Thomas Frank but find it increasingly difficult to create chances in open play.

They have won only two of their last seven, including a Carabao Cup win against Doncaster Rovers of League One and the next seven fixtures include severe tests of their progress under Frank against Chelsea, Newcastle, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal.

‘There are periods in the season, and it is not always easy,’ Vicario added. ‘We play every three games and the level we want always to be as high as you can, but sometimes we cannot hit the best and Monaco was like was this.

‘It was a bad day. We will review it because it is a big learning for us. We will work on it, but we know what our level can be. This was of course not top. We will work on it, assess it and we go again on Sunday.’

Vicario has been criticised for his performances this season but the Italian goalkeeper excelled in Monaco.

‘It was my day in terms of saves and helping the team,’ he said. ‘I am happy for that. Not the best performance from us, we know it and we have to work on it. We will do it. We have to learn from this game and try to put it straight away at Everton.’
