A builder who dumped a huge pile of rubbish on open land has been fined more than £1,000.
Stephen Cawley admitted fly-tipping after investigators discovered he was responsible for discarding waste from a building job, Manchester City Council said.
The authority said building and household rubbish – linked to a nearby property which was undergoing renovation by Cawley’s firm Builder Boys Ltd – was found on land next to a footpath on Altrincham Road, Northenden, on 17 April 2023.
The 36-year-old, of Altrincham Road, Northenden, was fined £320 at Manchester Magistrates’ Court and ordered to pay £750 in costs, and a £128 victim surcharge.
Despite repeated attempts by the council’s environmental crimes team to contact the company and Cawley for a formal interview, no response was received, council officials said.
Shortly after the council indicated it would pursue prosecution, an application was submitted to strike off the company. The team said it had received no contact from Cawley to date.
The council said it decided to prosecute when the building business was later liquidated.
Councillor Lee-Ann Igbon said: “Fly-tipping remains a selfish and disgusting crime which impacts our communities and environment.”
She added: “I welcome the result of this case, and I am confident it will serve as a warning to others who consider partaking in this heinous crime that we do take this offence seriously and will act to bring perpetrators to justice.”
