- Clue: it has something to do with Gold Coast Suns star Matt Rowell
He might be one of the best players in the AFL, but Nick Daicos is rapidly becoming a meme for finishing second-best – including in a recent image that saw fans ripping into the Magpies star over his fashion sense.
It comes after Daicos finished second in the 2025 Brownlow Medal count, behind Gold Coast Suns star Matt Rowell.
It was familiar territory for the Collingwood star, who also finished runner-up in 2024 after missing the final rounds of the regular season in the Magpies’ charge to the AFL Grand Final.
It got worse for Daicos at the Collingwood awards night following the 2025 season, with the midfielder the raging favourite to take home the E.W. Copeland Trophy for best and fairest.
Instead, Max Holmes claimed the gong and Daicos was relegated to runner-up once again.
So when Daicos posed for a photo at the recent Guineas Day racing meet, fans couldn’t resist taking another shot.
Channel Seven shared this image of Nick Daicos with racing and footy commentary legend Bruce McAvaney

Daicos has had a shocking run of finishing second at awards nights, including the Brownlow Medal
The Collingwood star posed for a pic with racing doyen Bruce McAvaney with Channel Seven sharing the image with the caption ‘Couple of promising types’.
While both men were dressed sharply for the day, viewers agreed that McAveney wore his suit better.
‘Second best again in this pic Nick,’ one fan commented cheekily.
‘Horrible suit. Both buttons done up? Three votes Rowell,’ another posted, in reference to the 2025 Brownlow Medal count.’
The angle of the photo didn’t help, with some saying Daicos looked like he was wearing an ill-fitting hand-me-down – or a suit that belongs to his 211cm teammate, ruckman Mason Cox.
‘Danny DeVito called, he wants his suit back,’ one follower posted.
‘Got granddads suit on,’ another said.
Yes another fan added: ‘Craig McRae reckons nick should have won the Guineas.’

Collingwood coach Craig McRae made a crack about Daicos’ record at awards nights recently, but also called for the voting system to be reformed
The last comment came after McRae made a cheeky comment about Daicos coming second at awards nights.
‘He came runner-up in the Brownlow Medal again. Maybe a few more 16-disposal games might get you there next year, Nick,’ McRae said.
While Nick could see the humour, his father Peter Daicos – a premiership-winning Magpie in his own right – did not, storming out of the awards ceremony.
McRae later clarified that he was not taking a swipe at Rowell, but rather wanted to see reform when it came to the voting systems at the Brownlow and club awards nights.
‘Maybe it was taken that I was disrespecting Matty Rowell, which is completely not what I said,’ McRae said.
‘The AFL processes can be improved, that’s maybe where I was targeting the 16 possessions.
‘The whole game itself – we need to live in a growth mindset, there’s an opportunity for all of us to improve.
‘I look at our best-and-fairest – we have to look at ourselves. We have to keep improving ourselves all the time, about how we conduct the game and what the game looks like.’
