Alex Carey has paid a heartfelt tribute to his father, Gordon, who tragically passed away this week following a long battle with cancer.

The Australian Test cricketer shared an image of himself and his dad having a beer in the changing rooms at the MCG following a match during the 2023-24 season.

He captioned the image: ‘Rest in peace Dad, I love you.’

His sister Ashleigh also published an image on social media of her, her brothers, Alex and Adam, her mum, Andrea, and dad all joining arms, adding the caption: ‘The greatest man,’ with a dove emoji and a heart emoji.

Gordon had been diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL) and Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) in 2021.

Carey made his Test debut for Australia at the Gabba during the 2021 Ashes Series, and his father was unable to attend the match due to his treatment.

However, Gordon’s condition later improved, meaning that he was able to watch his son play during the second Test of the series in Adelaide.

Ahead of his Test debut, Carey had spoken out on the support his dad had given him during his cricketing career.

‘Dad’s not only been a mate but a coach of mine growing up, a mentor,’ he said back in 2021.

‘He’ll be watching. No doubt he’ll be on the phone there and I’ll get a message probably the night before the game telling me what to do.’

The South Australia wicketkeeper, who has amassed 2010 runs from 43 Test matches, is an ambassador for the Daffodil Foundation.

The charitable organisation conducts research into cancer treatment and finding a cure for the horrible disease. The body is dedicated to finding effective ways to save lives and improve treatment outcomes.

Others, including multiple cricket clubs, have paid tribute to Gordon following his passing.

South Australia side, the Marion Rams, wrote on Facebook: ‘The Marion Cricket Club is deeply saddened to learn about the passing of assistant coach Gordon Carey after a courageous battle with illness.

‘Gordon was a much-loved member of the Marion Cricket Club community, known for his generous and kind-hearted nature. Always willing to share his time, guidance, and wisdom, Gordon made a lasting impact on players, coaches, families, and supporters alike.

‘We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife Andrea, children Ashleigh, Alex and Adam, along with their partners and grandchildren.

‘Gordon’s spirit will remain a part of our club, and he will be always be remembered with gratitude and affection.’

Carey’s sister, Ashleigh, plays cricket for Reynella Cricket Club. The team also published a heartfelt note on Facebook.

‘Gordon had a strong connection with our cricket club, serving previously as our senior men’s coach and in more recent years, remaining closely connected through his daughter, Ashleigh,’ the club wrote on Facebook.

‘He will be remembered for the knowledge he shared, his humour, and the friendships he built with so many at Reynella. Gordon’s presence enriched our community, and he will be deeply missed.

‘Our heartfelt thoughts are with Ash and the Carey family during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Gordon Carey.’

Carey was added to Australia’s squad for their T20 tour of New Zealand last week. He was drafted in as injury cover for Josh Inglis.

Australia are due to fly out to New Zealand ahead of their opening match of the series in Tauranga on Wednesday, October 1.

It is understood that Carey will delay his plans to travel to New Zealand, but is expected to join up with the squad at some stage later in the tour.
