An interview with Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham leads The Daily Telegraph as he says “MPs want me to oust” Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. Burnham set out a manifesto and gave “the clearest hint yet” that he was “considering a return to Westminster”, the paper says. Also on the front page “give us speed camera cash to catch more drivers, demand police”.
The Daily Star headlines on “Wayne’s booze hell” as the former England football captain says “I’d be dead without Coleen”, his wife. The Star also says US President Donald Trump is the mayor of London’s “orange fanbaby” after mentioning Sir Sadiq Khan in his address to the UN.
The Metro leads with Sir Sadiq’s comment that Trump “must have a crush on me”. The paper has drawn a pink heart between the two after the president said the Muslim mayor wanted to bring Islamic law to London, to which Sir Sadiq replied, “I’m living rent free inside Donald Trump’s head.”
The i Paper goes with “sudden hope” for its top story as a “breakthrough gene therapy can treat Huntington’s for first time.” It is “beyond our wildest hopes” to have discovered the treatment for the incurable disease that causes degeneration of nerve cells in the brain, said researcher Professor Ed Wild. There is also a “chance” for UK students to study in Europe from 2027 under a “new Erasmus deal”, the i reports.
“Bond giant Pimco bets falling inflation will pave way for deeper” Bank of England cuts is the headline for the Financial Times. The super typhoon in Asia is also snapped on the front page, with a shot of a car hanging over a wall on a flooded street. Taiwan and China have been “ravaged” by the deadly storm, says the FT.
The Guardian leads on Sir Keir’s move to fund deprived areas of the UK with “tens of millions of pounds each”. He “gambles on new ‘levelling up’ funding to tackle rise of Reform” UK, it reports. Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelensky is pictured speaking at the UN, where he said Russia was causing the “most destructive arms race in history”.
It is “McSweeneygate” for the Daily Mail, who say the PM’s top aide, Morgan McSweeney, “was told by electoral watchdog that donations had to be declared”. The paper also includes a snap of a younger Rooney holding a drink next to his wife.
There is “pressure on PM” says the Times as the government’s child poverty task force will advise Sir Keir to “lift two-child benefit cap”. Zelensky’s warning to the UN over Russian aggression also features on the paper, as it notes that he echoed Trump’s “scorn” for “weak” international institutions to respond to Russia.
The Sun leads with “Afghan refugee goes on hols to, er, Afghanistan” and “then we let him back in!” The tabloid dubs the Home Office “clueless” for granting the man in question asylum. Like many of today’s fronts it also runs the Rooney story but unlike the other papers it has Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson calling Reform UK leader Nigel Farage a “threat to UK”.
Thomas Skinner, the former Apprentice star who is now appearing on Strictly Come Dancing, makes the Daily Mirror’s top story. It alleges his business The Fluffy Pillow Company has an “unpaid £50k Covid loan”. Rooney’s comments about his drinking also make the Mirror front.
“The country is sick of activist judges” reads the headline on the Daily Express, quoting shadow lord chancellor Robert Jenrick. The paper writes that he thinks “Britain’s ability to deport criminals and failed asylum seekers could be undermined”.
