  • Required a valve replacement in his heart
  • Wicketkeeper-batsman ‘lived to tell the tale’
  • Shane Warne died from a heart attack in 2022

Australian cricket great Brad Haddin is recovering following recent heart surgery – and he declared the valve replacement operation was a resounding success.

Haddin, 47, shared the news after a stint in Sydney’s Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, which included time in intensive care.

‘I’ve had about a week in hospital, a couple days in ICU, a few days on the ward,’ Haddin said on the latest Willow Talk podcast.

‘The surgeons and the team at RPA were absolutely outstanding.’

The ex-wicketkeeper turned coach and commentator is now resting at home.

‘I’ve got six weeks not to do too much,’ he added.

‘But I look at it the other way, the surgery was a success. So thanks to all the well wishers, things are going to plan.

‘I live to tell the tale. Everything’s good, recovery’s on track.’

Haddin is also expected to return to commentary roles for the Ashes this summer.

‘The older we get, we need to make sure we are prioritising our health,’ the father of three said.

‘I’ve known about mine for some time, the heart disease, things just happened pretty quick the last couple of weeks.

‘Everything is going in the right direction, I’ve got a smile on my face.

‘I’m not allowed to train or be active or anything like that, that’s been a bit frustrating, but I’m just starting to come out the other side.’

Haddin’s heart scare comes after a series of cardiac issues involving former Australian cricketers in recent years.

Legends Rod Marsh, 74, and Shane Warne, 52, both died following heart attacks in 2022.

Darren Lehmann also had a major heart attack on his 50th birthday in 2020.

He needed triple bypass surgery and urged fellow Aussies not to ignore their health.
