  • The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh attended a reception at British Embassy Tokyo celebrating the expansion of the MUSUBI Initiative, strengthening UK-Japan ties.

  • Three new programmes were announced aimed at empowering youth, promoting sustainable development, and enhancing cultural exchange.

  • The MUSUBI Initiative is an innovative public-private partnership to grow future Japanese leaders through sports programmes, business, educational and cultural exchanges.

Tokyo, Japan – [19 September 2025] – The British Embassy Tokyo hosted a lunchtime reception attended by The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh to launch new UK-Japan partnership programmes as part of the MUSUBI Initiative, an innovative public-private partnership to encourage investment and grow the next generation of UK and Japanese leaders.

The presence of their Royal Highnesses reflects the deepening friendship and shared values between the United Kingdom and Japan.

The reception celebrated the launch of three new MUSUBI programmes. Odgers and Chubu Electric will support a mentorship scheme for emerging female leaders, whilst LSEG are providing a career support network for women in finance. Deloitte will support MUSUBI’s development into an independent foundation. Senior officials, business leaders, educators, and cultural figures from both nations gathered in the Ambassador’s ballroom at the British Embassy Tokyo to celebrate these programmes aimed at empowering youth, promoting sustainable development, and enhancing cultural exchange.

The MUSUBI Initiative, launched at Expo 2025, has represented a first-of-its-kind public-private partnership between the UK and Japan.  Rooted in the Japanese concept of musubi – meaning “connection” or “tying together” – the initiative brings together government, industry, academia, and civil society to create meaningful, long-term connections and aims to build a future generation of young leaders in the UK and Japan who drive forward positive change.
