Ruben Amorim retains the backing of the Manchester United board, who remain of the view that he is the man to turn the club’s fortunes around.

Sunday’s 3-0 derby defeat at rivals City means that, with four points from their opening four games, United have recorded their worst start to a Premier League season since 1992-93.

They are also out of the Carabao Cup, having lost on penalties to League Two Grimsby Town.

However, Daily Mail Sport understands that there are no plans to fire the Portuguese, who joined midway through last season, and a view that – despite results – progress is being made.

The impact of injuries to key players such as Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount has also been noted.

United host Chelsea next weekend but matches against Brentford and Sunderland are likely to provide more of a barometer as to where they are currently at as they attempt a rebuild.

Amorim has insisted he will not tinker with his tactical approach despite a poor return since his arrival.

‘I won’t change my philosophy,’ Amorim said after the loss to City. ‘If they (United bosses) want it changed, you change the man.

‘I am not going to change my philosophy. I will play my way until I want to change. Guys, I understand and I accept it is not a record you should have at Man United.

‘But there are a lot of things that you have no idea about what happen in the last months.

‘I understand everything. It is normal, but I don’t accept that we are not doing better.

‘We are doing better and the results don’t show that, the record says everything, I understand.’
