  • Started working with Richmond Tigers in February
  • Impressed by the collective desire to improve

Brendan Fevola has revealed what AFLW stars do better than professional men’s players – and why the women’s game will only improve.

Speaking on the AFLW Weekly podcast, Fevola confirmed working with Richmond’s team this season has seen him rediscover his love for the sport.

‘Working with the girls has literally changed my life,’ the decorated Carlton full forward said.

‘I’ve never been happier or fitter…it has also given me purpose.

‘They train three times a week…but many are in there (Tigers club facilities) doing extras on allocated days off.

‘The biggest difference for me is they are just happy, and they want to be better.’

Fevola added the current pay gap is significant, and the AFLW stars know it will be a long road before certain players command salaries of $1million plus.

‘They are being paid peanuts (in comparison), but they all turn up to train, recovery and skills sessions,’ he said.

‘The girls inspire me, they really do.’

In February, Richmond announced they had secured the services of Fevola as a specialist coach.

He places focus on forward play and development at Punt Rd.

Richmond Head of Women’s Football Kate Sheahan at the time said Richmond’s players would benefit greatly from Fevola’s expertise and energy.

‘To have a former champion of the game so passionate and invested in women’s football is exactly the type of person we want involved in our program,’ she said.

‘His energy is infectious and his on-field resume speaks for itself.

‘However, what has really stood out when talking to Brendan – who is, of course, a father of four girls- is his genuine excitement for women’s football.

‘Our players are thrilled to have him on board.’

Fevola is a three-time All Australian representative and two-time Coleman Medallist.

He booted 623 goals across 204 games with Carlton and Brisbane.
