An iconic goalkeeper reportedly abandoned his deadline day transfer negotiations for a coffee and never returned.

Amid the prospective move, the former World Cup custodian would not even answer his phone, leaving his wannabe employers mystified.

Guillermo Ochoa, 40, is known for featuring at the World Cup five times and winning the CONCACAF Gold Cup six times with Mexico – as well as his distinctive hairstyle and headband.

But now he has added a layer of mystique to his legacy by bailing out on Spanish second division club Burgos, who he looked set to join at the weekend after a year with Portuguese outfit AVS.

The medical was done and Burgos had agreed most of the details with Ochoa’s camp, according to Spanish journalist Sergio Gonzalez Pulgar.

But then Ochoa said that one point in the contract needed to be changed, before popping out for a hot drink.

Legendary Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa was set for a move to Burgos – until he went for a cofee mid-way through negotiations and disappeared

Ochoa, 40, has played at five World Cups and been at clubs in five different countries

Pulgar went on to report that Burgos have not heard a word from the player thereafter.

The Segunda Division outfit have since signed Jesus Ruiz instead to serve as their wall of flesh between the sticks.

They secured the services of Ruiz from Racing de Ferrol with just an hour to spare of the transfer window.

As well as a wealth of experience, Ochoa would have possibly brought more eyeballs on Burgos.

The Mexican stopper has 3.1 million followers on Instagram and is one of Mexican football’s most treasured sons from the last couple of decades.

But that latest plot line in a career which has seen him play in five countries will not be written.

Ochoa, who has 151 caps for Mexico, is now a free agent.
