Rail passengers are being warned of ticket check disruption due to strike action.

The RMT union said its members working on Northern’s Carlisle Support Services contract – which covers revenue protection and station gateline roles – voted to walk out in a dispute over pay and conditions.

It claimed the company had refused to make an offer, despite nine months of negotiations. The has approached Carlisle Support Services for comment.

Staff will strike for 24 hours on Tuesday and will refuse to scan tickets or charge company equipment at home from Wednesday, RMT said.

The union said the strike action would disrupt ticket checks and ticket barrier operations across the Northern network.

Eddie Dempsey, RMT general secretary, warned the company it was “time to come back with a serious offer”, and called for those workers to be taken “back in house, directly employed by Northern.”

“Our members do vital frontline work keeping stations safe and services running and they deserve respect and a fair pay rise,” he said.

Northern said it was unable to comment.
