A man died from multiple injuries after falling from a mountain ridge in Wales’ largest national park, an inquest has heard.

Thomas Alan Smith from Bolton, Greater Manchester, was climbing Yr Wyddfa, also known as Snowdon, at about 11:30 BST on 16 August when he fell from a narrow ridge known as Crib Goch.

Emergency services, including North Wales Police and the Llanberis Mountain Rescue team, attended the scene in Eryri National Park, also known as Snowdonia, in Gwynedd, but the 36-year-old died before he could be treated.

A short hearing in Caernarfon on Wednesday heard Mr Smith was a plasterer by trade and had travelled to Wales on the morning he died to climb Yr Wyddfa.

Coroner Sarah Riley said he was located by search and rescue teams, “but a medic on the rescue helicopter confirmed he had passed away at the scene”.

A post-mortem examination found he had died from multiple injuries.

The inquest was adjourned while further investigations take place.
