Roma director of football Frederic Massara has accused Jadon Sancho of lacking ‘motivation’ during negotiations to join the Serie A side.

Sancho is expected to depart Manchester United this summer after four difficult years at Old Trafford.

The former England international has been informed that he is surplus to requirements by United boss Ruben Amorim, with his contract set to expire next summer.

Chelsea initially appeared to be his most likely destination after he spent last season on loan at the club but Enzo Maresca’s side ultimately opted not to make the move permanent.

Roma have since been in talks with the 25-year-old and Massara recently shed light on the current situation.

‘Sancho is a strong player, who was linked with all the Italian clubs,’ Massara told SportMediaset.

Jadon Sancho’s move to Roma has been thrown into doubt following comments made by the club’s director of football

‘At the moment, it is only a suggestion, because it doesn’t seem as if there are the right conditions and above all, the motivation to carry on these negotiations.’

However, despite Massara’s comments Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini insisted that their move for Sancho is not yet dead in the water.

‘Sancho never said no to Roma,’ Gasperini claimed.

‘There are eight days left. This is a good team, anyway. As I said before, there’s no end to the worst and the best.’

Roma secured Europa League football with a fifth-placed finish in Serie A last season under a succession of managers.

Claudio Ranieri returned for a third spell in the Italian capital last season before moving into an advisory role at the club this summer.
