Graham Potter’s position at West Ham is safe… for now, but the clock is ticking after catastrophic start

Graham Potter’s position as West Ham head coach is safe for now — but he must oversee an immediate upturn in form to continue into the autumn.

West Ham’s start to the season has been catastrophic and the sight of the London Stadium being almost empty with 10 minutes of the 5-1 defeat to Chelsea remaining illustrated the depth of division around the club.

Potter was only appointed to the role in January.

It was initially suggested he would have a six-month contract but the former Chelsea boss signed for two-and-a-half years.

Whether he reaches his first anniversary, though, is a matter of contention.

It is understood that Potter will be in charge for this week’s games against Wolves, in the League Cup, and Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.

But the dreadful performances against Chelsea and in the 3-0 defeat at Sunderland in the season opener have placed the 50-year-old under enormous pressure.

West Ham are looking to bolster their squad before the transfer window closes but, after the international break, Potter has games looming against Tottenham, Crystal Palace, Everton and Arsenal.

Potter has taken charge of 21 games in all competitions since replacing Julen Lopetegui in January.

He has lost 11 of them, drawn five and won five — giving him a win-rate of 23.81%.
