Wigan Warriors have brought in Paul Deacon to join Matt Peet’s coaching staff.

The 46-year-old returns to Wigan as assistant coach after a decade in rugby union having left Sale Sharks at the end of last season as part of a backroom reshuffle at the Gallagher Premiership club.

Wigan-born Deacon, a former Hindley amateur, spent four years with the club from 2010 under Shaun Wane and was also appointed England assistant coach for the 2013 World Cup.

“I’m humbled and honoured to be working with this group of coaches and players and to be coming into the best team in the world,” Deacon told the Wigan Warriors website., external

“It’s nice to be home again, and hopefully I can bring something extra to the group.”

Deacon had served as attack and skills coach for Sale, helping them reach the Premiership play-offs in four of the past five seasons.

“I’m delighted to welcome Paul into the coaching team,” said head coach Peet.

“He is a good man that knows the club well and through his time in rugby union he has gained invaluable experience. His knowledge and skillset will help us all improve.”
