Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly agreed a deal for a new goalkeeper, leaving the future of Gianluigi Donnarumma up in the air – with Manchester United and Manchester City now poised to pounce.

United are still hunting for stability between the sticks following a rough two-year spell from Andre Onana, who has failed to impress since joining from Inter Milan for £47.2million in 2023.

Since his arrival, no Premier League goalkeeper has committed more errors leading to goals across all competitions than Onana’s eight. His save percentage in 2024–25 was just 67.2 per cent – ranking 11th in the league.

Meanwhile at City, Ederson’s long-term future has been questioned, and the club are set to re-sign James Trafford from Burnley for £27m.

Trafford is regarded as a bright talent who could provide competition or eventually succeed Ederson down the line.

The 22-year-old came through City’s academy but never made a senior appearance for the first team before joining Burnley in 2023 for £15m – nevertheless, City retained a buy-back option for their exciting talent.

According to L’Equipe, PSG are closing in on signing Lille’s promising shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier.

The 23-year-old is seen as a long-term project who could eventually start for the French capital club.

The arrival of Chevalier could force Donnarumma to consider his options, with both United and City said to be in the race to sign him.

Before sanctioning Donnarumma’s departure, it is believed that PSG want to secure the signing of Chevalier.

Donnarumma enjoyed the most successful season of his career in 2024-25, registering 12 clean sheets as PSG marched to an imperious treble-winning campaign.

The Italian shot-stopper is widely considered the frontrunner to win the Yashin Trophy for a second time – an award handed out to the best-performing goalkeeper in the world.

It has not yet been disclosed what fee PSG would demand for Donnarumma, but it would not be surprising if clubs were forced to break the bank for him.

Kepa Arrizabalaga remains the most expensive goalkeeper ever, after Chelsea signed him from Athletic Bilbao in 2018 for £71.6m.

Donnarumma’s deal expires in the summer of 2026, but he has made it clear that he wants to stay in Paris.

‘My priority is to stay at PSG and sign a new deal,’ he said last month. ‘I don’t think there will be any problems in the negotiations.’

Donnarumma began his career at ASD Club Napoli’s youth system before moving to AC Milan, where he went on to make his Serie A debut at 16 years old in 2015.

He cemented himself as not only one of the most exciting young talents but one of the best goalkeepers in world football, before joining PSG as a free agent in the summer of 2021.
