Former Premier League star is the ‘main obstacle’ to Marcus Rashford joining Barcelona from Man United

Marcus Rashford is known to be keen on a move to Barcelona this summer but there is reportedly one major issue holding back a potential deal.

Rashford, 27, has been at Manchester United since the age of seven but said in December that he was ‘ready for a new challenge’.

He then spent the second half of the season on loan at Aston Villa, scoring four goals in 17 games. However, Villa decided not to sign Rashford permanently at the end of that loan spell and he therefore returned to Old Trafford.

Rashford is still under contract with United until June 2028 and is understood to be earning in excess of £300,000 per week.

United would like to get him off their wage bill and are open to offers but the player’s huge wages are seemingly limiting his options.

There is interest from some members of Barcelona’s transfer committee, according to Javi Miguel, but the journalist suggests that sporting director Deco is not convinced.

Miguel tweeted this week: ‘Deco remains the main obstacle in the Rashford operation.

‘There are still significant discrepancies in the Sporting Committee regarding the attacking reinforcement. The priority now is on departures to free up salary space.’

Deco, who won the Premier League with Chelsea in 2010, has been Barca’s sporting director since August 2023.

His most expensive signing to date has been Dani Olmo, who arrived from RB Leipzig last summer for a fee in the region of £50million.

United would likely command a smaller fee for Rashford.

Barca have also been heavily linked with interest in Liverpool’s Luis Diaz this summer, while Bayern Munich are keen on the Colombian too.
