  • The star was on loan at Chelmsford from Ipswich before signing for Wimbledon
  • He made six appearances for the club after joining them in the January window

A football star playing in the Football League has been charged with breaching betting rules.

Footballers are prohibited from gambling on the sport, though a number of players have been charged over the years. Ivan Toney received a ban over two years ago for gambling involvement.

Now, AFC Wimbledon’s Osman Foyo has been charged, with it alleged he placed bets on matches 252 times between October 2023 and March 2025.

Foyo, 20, has made six appearances for Wimbledon since joining the club in the winter transfer window, having spent the first half of the season on loan at Chelmsford when he was contracted at Ipswich.

His form in the National League South, which saw him score 12 goals in 21 games, attracted the interest of the then-League Two side, who won promotion to League One in the play-offs.

He played for his current side as recently as Tuesday, in their friendly against Enfield Town. He scored twice.

Foyo could face a lengthy ban if he is found guilty of the charges, with Toney receiving an eight-month ban and Ryan Bowman, formerly of the likes of Cheltenham and Shrewsbury given a three-and-a-half-year ban this week.

Bowman was found to have placed 6,397 bets over a 12-month period.

The FA say players cannot bet in order to ‘help protect the integrity and future of football’.

Managers, coaches, and other staff members are also prohibited from places bets on the sport.

AFC Wimbledon have been contacted for comment.
