Firefighters battled the blaze at the Big Kid Circus in Fife

A huge fire at a circus during a live performance was caused by a faulty washing machine, Scotland News can reveal.

Firefighters were called to a trailer on fire at the Big Kid Circus in Glenrothes, Fife, just after 19:00 on Thursday.

The Kingdom of Kong show at the circus, which features a 30ft (9m) tall animatronic gorilla, had started at 18:00.

Fife Council confirmed the fire broke out away from the Big Top tent and nobody in the audience was hurt.

Lisa McCann, Fife Council’s service manager, told Scotland News it had been liaising with event organisers following the incident.

“The fire originated from a faulty washing machine in a box van which was well away from the Big Top tent and any attendees.

“It was swiftly extinguished and thankfully there were no injuries.

“Scottish Fire and Rescue have said the area is now safe and events are going on as planned.”

Big Kid Circus has been contacted for comment.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed it had sent two appliances to the fire at the Warout Playing Fields.

The evening show marked the fourth of 10 planned in the town.

Last month, the circus toured Motherwell, Cumbernauld and Falkirk.

It has future dates lined up for Balloch, Kilmarnock and Carlisle over the summer holidays.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 19:04 on Thursday, 3 July, to reports of a vehicle alight on Pinkerton Road, Glenrothes.”

They extinguished the fire in one lorry and said there were no reports of casualties.
