  • The two-time Wimbledon champion is 3-0 up in the fifth set in the first round tie

Carlos Alcaraz’s clash with Fabio Fognini on Centre Court was brought to a half after a fan in the stands was taken ill in the punishing 31 degrees Celsius heat on Monday afternoon.

The two-time Wimbledon champion is 3-0 up in the fifth set, but paused proceedings when he noticed the spectator had become unwell.

Alcaraz then brought his own water bottles to the fan before they were attended to by medical staff on hand at the All England Club.

The Spaniard was among the first to have spotted the stricken fan and hovered by the side of the court near where the medical emergency took place.

After sharing his water quickly with the spectator, Alcaraz watched for several moments, while Fognini took necessary shelter from the beating sun crouched under the umpire’s chair.

Stewards also sheltered the woman while she was immediately looked after on Centre Court, before leaving the show court on a stretcher for further attention minutes later.

‘He was really concerned about, and he stayed there talking to her and her family the whole time,’ one spectator said.

Alcaraz later gave the crowd a thumb’s up to signal positive signs from the fan and began warming up, with the break lasting 17 minutes in total.
