  • Carlton great turned out for South Australian side on weekend

Carlton great Brendan Fevola has been filmed in a nasty brawl with two rival footballers as he played for a struggling South Australian club on Sunday.

The 44-year-old ran out for South Whyalla and kicked two goals to play a big role in the club’s two-point win over bitter rivals Central Whyalla – but got into a heated melee in the fourth quarter of the match.

Fevola was in a confrontation with two opposition players when a third ran in and  smashed into him from behind.

‘Fev’ reacted by grabbing the opposition player’s jersey with his right hand and punching him repeatedly in the upper chest while his own top was nearly ripped off as he was slung to the ground, taking the two rivals with him.

Footage of the incident was captured by SA Regional Footy.

‘Fev’s into it!’ one of the commentators said.

‘Fev’s getting a how do you do,’ his calling partner added.

‘Young Quirky’s into it! Hello, hello, hello! Gee, he’s got three versus one.

‘Not sure if this is a fairly good welcome, is it? He’s come in to play a game of footy for the Whyalla footy league and he’s getting a fair bit of attention.’

Fevola was awarded a free kick after the stoush but was also ‘sent off’ for 10 minutes in that final quarter, News Corp reported.

The two goals from the former Blues champion were crucial in the 6.10 (46) to 6.8 (44) victory, but it’s not the first time he has made headlines while playing for a struggling club.

On May 10 he and singer Guy Sebastian ran out for Masala Dandenong’s reserves side as the club tried to break a long losing streak.

The two stars helped the team record a two-point win – but Sebastian was forced to use crutches after rupturing his Achilles tendon.

‘Guy actually played the first quarter, sung at half-time, sung virtually a whole concert and then he was so into it, he was actually having a crack,’ Fevola explained.

‘He goes “I’ll play the second half”. Fourth quarter, I saw him fall down and I couldn’t stop laughing because he just fell. I was like “mate, singers shouldn’t play footy, footy players shouldn’t sing, keep to your genre”.

‘And he looked around and he goes “I think something popped”. I said that’s not good, because I’ve done both Achilles.

‘He’s ruptured his Achilles. He’s getting surgery on Monday and is in hospital. So he missed his mate’s 40th but hey we got good headlines, which is great (laughs).’

Their participation wasn’t without controversy. Before the match, the Victorian Amateur Football Association launched an investigation into concerns raised by rival clubs over whether the high-profile pair were being paid – which is prohibited in the amateur league.

The league confirmed both Fevola and Sebastian were cleared to play after assurances they would receive no payment or benefits.
