  • Scotland winger Van der Merwe will need to improve to make the Lions Test team
  • Motorsport legend Allan McNish tells Mail Sport that even the midges are a hazard at Le Mans
  • Former Rangers chairman David Murray outlines his fears for the club under their new American owners

The sporting week began on a sad note with the announcement that British and Irish Lions great Ian ‘Mighty Mouse’ McLauchlan had passed away.

McLauchlan was considered one of the toughest and feistiest players to ever pull on a Scotland jersey, something he did 43 times between 1969 and 1979.

It was his performances for the Lions, however, that elevated the Ayrshire-born prop’s reputation and brought him to wider recognition, something he did with distinction over two tours of duty.

Mail Sport paid fitting tribute to the Mouse Who Roared with Graeme Macpherson tracking his incredible journey from Tarbolton to Dunedin and back again.

Another former Scotland great and two-time tourist John Beattie looked back on his Lions memories with Hugh MacDonald.

Beattie was selected for the 1980 tour to South Africa and 1983 trip to New Zealand.

The Lions made an inauspicious start to their campaign with defeat against Argentina, with Mail Sport highlighting the performance of Scottish winger Duhan van der Merwe.

The big wing looked promising in attack during defeat to the Pumas but was at fault for two Argentina tries in the first half.

Lions head coach Andy Farrell needs to see big improvement from van der Merwe if he’s to make the Test team to face Australia.

Mail Sport’s Heather Dewar spoke exclusively to motorsport legend Allan McNish and found out that even the midges are a hazard at Le Mans. The Scottish driver revealed all about the thrills, spills and unexpected challenges of motor sport’s greatest test of endurance.

The 55-year-old is the holder of three Le Mans titles, having made 14 starts and earned a place in the Hall of Fame. ‘It’s not just a motor sport fixture,’ says McNish. ‘It’s ingrained in French culture.’

The football season may be dormant at the moment but Mail Sport’s Ian Herbert brought you new revelations from former Rangers chairman Sir David Murray, who outlined his fears for the club under new American owners.

Murray claims Rangers are missing out on a Scottish core and should be going for players like Lennon Miller.

The former Rangers owner, promoting his new book Mettle, doubts the entire £20million outlay touted by Andrew Cavenagh’s 49ers Enterprises-backed consortium will be made available for players
