The event in Shrewsbury in 2024

Visitors to Shrewsbury railway station next Monday (23 June, from 10am to 2pm) will be able to get their bikes security marked for free, pick up some bike related freebies and take part in an active travel survey.

It’s part of the Transport for Wales (TfW) annual series of bike events across the Wales and Borders region, in partnership with British Transport Police. The events are now in their third year,

To date over 350 bikes have been security registered and over 400 responses to the TfW active travel survey have been received.

Rob Wilson, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for transport and economic growth, said:

“Cycling is a great way to get around Shrewsbury, and it’s fantastic that Transport for Wales and British Transport Police have organised a security marking session at the railway station. We all know that congestion is an issue in the town, but the more people who can walk and cycle for short journeys, the more road space is freed up for buses and those who need to drive.

“Through UK Government funding, Shropshire Council has recently been able to support the Big Town Plan Partnership to roll out the Shrewsbury Moves eBike loan scheme, safe cycle storage, and an eCargo bike loan scheme for businesses. Each of these programmes have been delivered through partnership working with Shrewsbury BID.

“These measures all support the Shrewsbury Movement and Public Space Strategy which provides an holistic plan to improve travel in the town over the next 10 years.”

The aim of TFW events is to inspire people to travel more sustainably and challenge themselves to get on a bike, whether that’s to cycle to work, study or simply to enjoy a local leisure journey!

They also promote the benefits of cycling, amenities including cycle parking and active travel routes available at each location.
