Radio star Lucy Zelic has slammed the punishment handed to AFL cult hero Warwick Capper after he allegedly made multiple ‘vile comments’ to catering staff during the 2024 Grand Final at the MCG.

The AFL confirmed this week that Capper has been banned from all AFL venues for five years after his alleged inappropriate behaviour.

Capper had allegedly made lewd remarks about members of the catering staff and also ‘intimidated a female staff member’, reported Channel 7.

It is understood that he was removed from the corporate suite before being ejected from the venue entirely.

According to The Herald Sun, Capper had allegedly told a caterer at the MCG: ‘You’re a nice looking girl. You’d look good in my brothel.’ But his manager Tony Marks said Capper had not made that comment directly to the staff member.

‘He did make a light-hearted joke to somebody in the room,’ Marks said to the outlet.

‘But not with any ill will. He definitely didn’t walk up and say it directly to her.’

Zelic described the ban on Capper as both ‘over the top’ and ’embarrassing’.

‘The AFL’s decision to ban Capper for five years over a comment he alleges he made in private, which someone overheard, about a legal industry in this country is just embarrassing,’ Zelic told 2GB’s Clinton Maynard.

‘And this coming from the mob… they are now the morality police, are they?

‘They’ve got a three strikes policy where a player can get caught doing drugs and all they’re gonna do is slap out suspensions.

‘This from the group that actually hid the fact that about 100 AFL players last year received secret immunity from the code’s three strikes drug policy, according to club medical officials.

‘This from them, all of a sudden they’ve got a moral compass about this? Give me a break. Five years. That’s a joke.’

AFL great Wayne Carey believes that the AFL probably made the right move.

‘What he said was clearly wrong, I imagine that wouldn’t have been the only thing. You don’t get barred for five years for one comment like that,’ Carey told Sam Newman on the You Cannot Be Serious podcast.

‘Does the punishment fit the crime, I’ve got no idea. I assume there would have been more than one comment. I officially would say that the AFL probably got this right.’

Carey also  stressed that he was no friend of Capper.

‘I don’t say anything about anyone I wouldn’t say to them,’ Carey said.

‘I have told Warwick this to his face, he’s too attention seeking when he’s in the public arena.

‘That’s why I call him vegemite, a little bit goes a long way.’
