Formula One rookie Gabriel Bortoleto crashed into the barriers during the opening lap of Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix.

Just moments after the race got underway the 20-year-old Brazilian found the barriers at Portier.

After an impressive start the Sauber driver looked to overtake fellow newcomer Kimi Antonelli before crashing.

In his first Formula One appearance at the iconic Circuit de Monaco Bortoleto was ultimately able to continue.

Following the incident a safety car was introduced for over three laps before the iconic race finally got back underway.

With the tone set by the dramatic start, proceedings were again disrupted in the ninth lap as Pierre Gasly crashed into the back of Yuki Tsunoda, resulting in another safety car being deployed.

The crash comes just hours after a massive pile-up occured following an early collision in Formula 2’s featured race.

After getting off to a poor start from pole, McLaren’s Alex Dunne surrendered the racing line to Victor Martins heading into Sainte Devote.

The Irishman’s front end then collided with the side of Martins’ car with the pair sent into the barriers in the famously narrow streets of the principality.

With little room to maneuver the incident quickly led to a pile-up, with a chain collision causing instant carnage.
