Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has called for his team-mates to step up next season and stop him winning the club’s player of the season award for a third time in a row.

The Portuguese midfielder claimed the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award last week for a fourth time in six years, equaling the club record.

Fernandes has dominated the award since he joined the Red Devils in 2019 and now wants other players to end his reign.

‘I hope next year, I’m not involved in the (shortlisted) names,’ Fernandes told CBS Sports.

‘Because that would mean that Amad has stepped up, (Alejandro) Garnacho has stepped up, Rasmus (Hojlund) has stepped up.

‘All the players that play up front, if they start scoring, start providing assists, start running backwards, tackling and everything they will have the attention and not me.

‘I would be the happiest person in the world because I am there to help my team-mates and get the best from them, which makes the team better.’

Fernandes has been the club’s shining light this term, leading the United charts for both goals and assists this season by some distance with 19 of each.

Ruben Amorim’s men have had a miserable domestic campaign and sit 16th in the Premier League with one game remaining, their worst ever campaign.

However, they can end their season on a high if they beat Tottenham in Wednesdya’s Europa League final.
